CO2 Therapy Procedure Details

What is the Skin Resurfacing Procedure Like?

Because we do not use intravenous sedation before this procedure, our we apply a topical anesthetic to the skin to make the procedure more comfortable. We are also able to provide a prescription for oral anxiety medication to be used during the procedure. We do require patients taking medication to have transportation afterwards.

During the procedure, Dr. Campbell moves the CO2 laser handpiece around the treatment area and applies a cold compress afterward. Although immediate chilling reduces inflammation, patients should expect the skin to redden and then swell overnight.

Patients can immediately resume normal activities. During the recovery period, patients apply a barrier cream (such as Aquaphor) to keep skin moist and promote healing. Skin redness will improve within a day or two. By day three or four patients will experience some peeling as fresher, younger-looking skin appears.

How Long Does this Procedure Take?

In most cases, CO2 Therapy performed on the entire face takes about twenty minutes. Smaller treatment areas take less time but the preparation for the treatment remains the same. Skin must be prepped, then numbing cream is applied and allowed to remain to assure our patient's comfort during the process. After treatment we dedicate an additional 20 minutes to cooling the skin which assures effective and prompt healing.

How Many Treatments are Required with CO2 Therapy?

Patients can expect excellent results after a single session. However, patients with severe wrinkling or deep acne scars may benefit from a series of treatments spaced about one month apart. During our initial consultation we advise our patients on what results they can reasonably expect.

What Precautions Should Patients Take Afterward?

Basic skincare, thorough cleaning, and sun protection help ensure long-lasting results. Patients should wear sunscreen and avoid direct sun exposure whenever possible, but especially in the weeks following treatment.
